How to use the worksheets

Worksheets go best when they feel like something you are doing together:

  1. 1

    Choose one page

and read the instructions out loud together.

  2. 2

    Do the first one together

so the idea is clear before they try one on their own.

  3. 3

    Give clues freely

The aim is to finish with a smile, not to finish alone.

  4. 4

    Talk about the words

“Did you grow roses?” or “Who made the bread at home?” often matters more than the puzzle.

  5. 5

Stop while it is still enjoyable

and save the rest for another day.

Which page to start with

  • Easiest: finish the pair and categories. Every sensible answer counts, and they lead naturally into conversation.
  • A little harder: missing letter and days and months.
  • Most concentration: the word searches and unscramble. Point to the first letter of a word if they get stuck.

If these feel too hard, try the picture-based printable activities for dementia patients: sorting cards, matching pairs and coloring. If they feel too easy, the large print word searches and trivia questions are the next step up.

Not a memory test

These worksheets are for enjoyment and conversation. They are not a memory test and do not treat, slow or prevent dementia. If you notice a sudden change in memory or behavior, talk to their doctor.

Frequently asked questions

Are these dementia worksheets really free?

Yes. All four PDFs download directly, with no email address, sign-up or payment. Print as many copies as you need for the people you care for.

Are the answers included?

Yes. The answers to the word searches, missing letters, unscramble, word pairs and days and months are on page 10. The categories page has no fixed answers: any sensible answer is right.

Why do the word searches only go across and down?

Backwards and diagonal words are much harder to spot. Keeping every word reading left to right or top to bottom makes the puzzle enjoyable rather than frustrating.

Do worksheets help with dementia?

They are not a treatment and cannot slow dementia. What they can offer is a pleasant, familiar activity, a sense of achievement and something to talk about together. Ask the doctor about anything to do with treatment.

Can I fill them in on a tablet?

Yes. Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader, Chrome or Edge and tap a box to type. Save the file to keep the answers.
