Free to print for personal use, at home or in a care setting, as many times as you like.

Word searches are relaxing, but only if you can read the letters. These 12 free printable puzzles use big, bold letters, friendly themes and words that never run backwards, with a full answer key at the back. Download the color edition below, or the black-and-white one to save ink.

Key takeaways

  • 12 free large print word search puzzles in one PDF, one puzzle per page, with answers at the back. No sign-up.
  • 8 large print puzzles (12 by 12 letters) and 4 extra-large print puzzles (9 by 9) for anyone who needs the biggest letters.
  • Words never run backwards — only left to right, top to bottom, or diagonally down — so the puzzles stay relaxing, not frustrating.
  • Play online too: every puzzle has its own playable page with a colored highlighter — tap the first letter, then the last.
  • Friendly themes, including a Fall Harvest word search for the season, gardening, birds, baking and the seaside.
  • A black-and-white edition is there too if color ink is low.

Download them free here: the large print word search PDF has 12 puzzles for seniors, one per page in big bold letters, with an answer key at the back. Eight are large print and four are extra-large print. Words only run forwards, downwards or diagonally down, never backwards. There is also a black-and-white edition to save ink. Both files contain the same 12 puzzles and the same answer key. Open either one in your browser or PDF reader and print as many copies as you like.

To print just one puzzle, type its page number in the print window. Puzzle 1 is on page 2 and Puzzle 12 is on page 13; the answers are on pages 14 to 16.

Printing tip

Print in Portrait at Actual size (or 100%) on US Letter paper. On A4, choose Fit to page. Keep a highlighter or a felt-tip pen handy — circling a word with a thick line is easier to see than a thin pencil mark.

What is inside: 12 themed puzzles

Every puzzle has a gentle theme, so the words are familiar and satisfying to find:

  • Large print (12 by 12 letters, 12 words each): Fall Harvest, In the Garden, Backyard Birds, Baking Day, Weather Watch, Trees of the Forest, By the Seaside and Road Trip.
  • Extra-large print (9 by 9 letters, 8 words each): On the Farm, Fruit Bowl, Around the House and Pets We Love. Letters are bigger still, and words only run across or down.

The Fall Harvest word search is a good one to start with this season — apples, pumpkins, acorns, cider and a hayride are all hidden in the grid.

How to solve a word search (the easy way)

  • Pick one word at a time from the list and look for its first letter.
  • Start with words that have unusual letters — a Q, K, Y or W is easier to spot than an E or an A.
  • Check the three directions. In these puzzles a word only runs to the right, downwards, or diagonally down to the right. It never runs backwards or upwards.
  • Run a finger along the row if the letters start to swim — there is no prize for speed.
  • Tick the box next to each word as you find it, so you always know what is left.

Stuck on the last word? The answer key at the back shows every word highlighted in its grid.

Choosing the right puzzle for you or a loved one

For tired eyes or low vision, start with the four extra-large print puzzles at the back of the set. Good light from the side, rather than from behind you, makes a real difference, and a handheld magnifier helps with smaller print elsewhere.

For someone with memory changes, choose a short puzzle and do it together. Read each word aloud, take turns finding them, and stop while it is still enjoyable — finishing half a puzzle is perfectly fine. If word searches start to frustrate, picture-based puzzles can be a better fit; see our guide to puzzles for dementia patients.

A note on brain games

Word searches are a pleasant way to keep the mind busy and to spend time together. They are a pastime, not a treatment: there is no good evidence that any one puzzle prevents memory loss.

Frequently asked questions

Are these large print word search puzzles really free?

Yes. Both PDFs download directly, with no email address, sign-up or payment. You can print them as many times as you like for personal use at home or in a care setting.

Are the answers included?

Yes. The last three pages of each PDF show every puzzle with all of its words highlighted.

Do any words run backwards?

No. Words only run left to right, top to bottom, or diagonally down to the right. In the four extra-large print puzzles, words only run across or down.

How big is the print?

Printed at actual size on Letter paper, the large print puzzles use bold 20-point letters on a 12 by 12 grid, and the extra-large print puzzles use bold 27-point letters on a 9 by 9 grid. The word lists are in 17-point and 21-point type.

Are word searches good for people with dementia?

For many people in the early stages, a short, easy word search done together is an enjoyable activity. Choose the extra-large print puzzles, read the words aloud and stop while it is still fun. If it causes frustration, switch to picture-based activities instead.
