Tips for a good puzzle session

  • Start easy. Extra-large print with words across and down, or Gentle Sudoku. Finishing a puzzle feels good; give up on one and it rarely gets picked up again.
  • Use personal words. A word search of grandchildren’s names or old street names is a puzzle and a conversation in one.
  • Print in black and white. The puzzles are designed to read clearly on any printer, and a soft pencil or a highlighter works better than a pen.

Is the puzzle maker really free?

Yes. Make and print as many word searches and Sudoku puzzles as you like, with no sign-up and no email. Families, activity directors, libraries and care homes can copy them for their groups.

Can I make a word search with my own words?

Yes. Choose “My own words” and type up to 15 words, such as family names, a hometown or a favorite hobby. Personal words make a puzzle more meaningful, and they are a good conversation starter for someone with memory loss.

How big is the print?

Extra-large print uses a 10 by 10 grid with letters over a third of an inch tall, large print uses 12 by 12, and standard uses 14 by 14. Every puzzle prints on its own page, on US Letter or A4.

Do the word searches have backwards words?

No. Words go across or down, and diagonally only if you tick the box. They never run backwards, which keeps them enjoyable rather than frustrating.

Which Sudoku level should I choose?

Start with Gentle, which gives 40 of the 81 numbers. Easy gives 34 and Medium 29. Every puzzle has exactly one solution, and the answers print on a separate page.

Can I print a set for a group?

Yes. Choose 2, 4, 6 or 10 puzzles. Each puzzle prints on its own page, and the answer pages come after them, so you can hand out the puzzles and keep the answers.

Is anything I type saved or sent anywhere?

No. The puzzles are made in your browser, and the words you type stay on your device.
