Large Print Crossword Puzzles for Seniors: 12 Free Printables (PDF)
Free to print for personal use, at home or in a care setting, as many times as you like.
A crossword is a lovely way to spend a quiet half hour, as long as you can read the clues and fit your letters in the squares. These 12 free printable crosswords are made for that: big squares, large clear clues on their own page, easy everyday words and a full answer key. Download the color edition below, or the black-and-white one to save ink.
Key takeaways
- 12 free large print crossword puzzles in one PDF, with answers at the back. No sign-up.
- Newspaper-style grids with black squares, but 9 by 9 instead of 15 by 15, so every square is three-quarters of an inch wide.
- The clues sit on their own page in 17-point type, next to the grid, so nothing is squeezed.
- Easy, everyday words and friendly clues: no slang, no obscure trivia.
- Play online too: every crossword has its own playable page — tap a square and type, with the clue in large print above the grid.
- A black-and-white edition is there too if color ink is low.
- Want something different? Make your own word search or Sudoku with our large print puzzle maker.
Quick answer
Where can I find free large print crossword puzzles to print?
Download them free here: the large print crossword PDF has 12 easy crosswords for seniors, each with a big 9 by 9 grid on one page and its clues in large print on the next, plus an answer key at the back. There is also a black-and-white edition to save ink. No email or sign-up is needed.
Download the free crossword puzzles
Both files contain the same 12 crosswords and the same answer key. Open either one in your browser or PDF reader and print as many copies as you like.
- Large Print Crosswords, color edition (PDF, 29 pages) — a cover, a how-to page, 12 puzzles (grid page + clue page each) and three pages of answers.
- Large Print Crosswords, black and white (PDF, 29 pages) — the same puzzles in black ink only.
Each crossword uses two pages: the grid, then its clues. Print both, or print double-sided so the clues are on the back. Crossword 1 is on pages 3 and 4, Crossword 2 on pages 5 and 6, and so on; the answers are on pages 27 to 29.
Printing tip
Print in Portrait at Actual size (or 100%) on US Letter paper. On A4, choose Fit to page. Use a soft pencil and keep an eraser handy: crosswords are much more relaxing when a wrong guess rubs out easily.

What is inside
- 12 easy crosswords, each with about 30 clues, numbered 1 to 12.
- Big squares: the grid fills most of the page, with clear numbers in each starting square.
- Large print clues: Across and Down in two columns, in 17-point type.
- A how-to page for anyone new to crosswords, and an answer key, four puzzles to a page.
How to solve a crossword (the easy way)
- Start with the fill-in-the-blank clues, like “I hope ___!”. They are usually the quickest.
- Count the squares. The number of white squares tells you how many letters the answer has.
- Use the crossing letters. Every answer you write gives you letters for the words that cross it.
- Skip and come back. A clue that seems impossible often answers itself once a few letters are in.
- Peek if you need to. The answer key is at the back, and checking one word to get going is perfectly fine.
Crosswords for a group or with a loved one
In a care home, library or senior center, read the clues aloud and let everyone call out answers while one person writes. Print the black-and-white edition and photocopy as many sets as you need.
With someone living with memory changes, do one together. Read each clue, give a hint when it helps, and stop while it is still enjoyable; filling in half a puzzle is a good afternoon. If word puzzles start to frustrate, picture-based puzzles can be a better fit: see our guide to puzzles for dementia patients.
A note on brain games
Crosswords are a pleasant way to keep the mind busy and to spend time together. They are a pastime, not a treatment: there is no good evidence that any one puzzle prevents memory loss.

Frequently asked questions
Are these large print crosswords really free?
Yes. Both PDFs download directly, with no email address, sign-up or payment. Print them as many times as you like for personal use at home or in a care setting.
Are the answers included?
Yes. The last three pages of each PDF show the completed grids, four puzzles to a page.
How big is the print?
Printed at actual size on Letter paper, each square is three-quarters of an inch wide, and the clues are in 17-point type on their own page.
How hard are the puzzles?
They are easy: everyday words, friendly clues and no trick wordplay. They suit anyone who enjoys a newspaper crossword but finds the print too small, and people who are new to crosswords.
Why are the clues on a separate page?
So both can be big. Squeezing 30 clues onto the same page as the grid would mean small print. Print both pages, or print double-sided so the clues are on the back of the grid.
