- Frequently asked questions
Reaching behind your back is the problem a front closure bra solves. Shoulder stiffness, a rotator cuff that no longer rotates, arthritis in the fingers, a recent surgery — any one of them turns a back-fastening bra into a ten-minute struggle, and that is what sends most people looking for this.
But "front closure" is not one thing. A hook-and-eye at the front still needs a pinch grip and a good deal of finger strength. A snap needs a hard press. A magnetic closure needs neither, and it is the only kind that genuinely works for hands that cannot grip — which is why it sits at rank 3 here despite costing roughly three times the others.
The second decision is support. A wire-free bra is far more comfortable, and most of the picks below are wire-free, but comfort and lift pull against each other. Where a manufacturer says plainly that its bra covers rather than lifts, we have quoted them — see our dressing aids guide if fastening clothing generally is the wider problem.

How we picked
We compared 6 options. We compared front-closure bras on the thing that actually decides whether one works: how much hand strength and dexterity the closure demands. Specifications come from manufacturer listings, not from marketing summaries or affiliate blogs. We do not test these hands-on, and we say so rather than implying otherwise. We do not show prices or star ratings, because without a live feed those go stale and misrepresent what you will pay.

Our picks, reviewed
Playtex 18 Hour Front-Close Wirefree Bra with Flex Back

This is the sensible default. Playtex makes the front hooks deliberately larger than standard, which is the single change that matters most if your fingers are stiff but still able to grip — it is easier to fasten without moving to a specialist adaptive product. It is wire-free, the straps adjust, and the flex back uses two wide crisscross stretch bands rather than a rigid band, so it moves when you move. Playtex's 4-way TruSUPPORT system spreads support across cups, sides, back and straps instead of loading it all onto the band.
What we like
- Larger front hooks — noticeably easier to fasten than standard hook-and-eye
- Wire-free, so nothing to poke or dig in
- Adjustable straps designed not to slip
- Flex back stretches rather than binding
Keep in mind
- Hand wash only, which is a genuine nuisance for an everyday bra
- Still a hook-and-eye — if gripping and pinching is the problem, go to the magnetic pick at rank 3
- Non-foam cups give support rather than shaping
Key features
- Larger front hooks for easier fastening
- Flex back with two wide crisscross stretch bands
- 4-way TruSUPPORT across cups, sides, back and straps
- Wire-free with non-foam cups
- Closure
- Hook & eye (larger hooks), front
- Wire
- Wire-free

- Everyday, 4-way

- Hand wash only
Glamorise MagicLift Posture Back Front-Closure Support Bra

If the reason you are looking is that a bra no longer lifts, this is the pick. Glamorise's MagicLift uses a cushioned band to lift and shape without a wire — it is the rare wire-free bra built around support rather than around comfort alone. The posture back is a crisscross panel that draws the shoulders back, which is the specific thing people mean when they search for a posture bra. The front hook-and-eye scales with size, adding columns and rows on larger bands, so the closure does not become the weak point on a bigger bra.
What we like
- Wire-free lift — support without an underwire
- Posture back crisscross draws the shoulders back
- Closure scales with size (2 columns, 5 rows)
- Wide cushioned straps that adjust
- Machine washable
Keep in mind
- Hook-and-eye closure still needs a pinch grip
- Posture panels feel firm at first and take some getting used to
- Plus-size cut — not the right shape for a smaller frame
Key features
- MagicLift cushioned band lifts without a wire
- Crisscross posture back
- Hook-and-eye columns increase with size
- Full figure / plus size cut
- Closure
- Hook & eye, front (2 col x 5 rows)
- Wire
- Wire-free (MagicLift)
- Support level
- High — lift plus posture back
- Straps
- Wide, cushioned, adjustable
- Care
- Machine wash
LIBERARE Easy On Magnetic Front-Closure Adaptive Bra

This is the only pick here that removes grip from the equation entirely. Liberare's HeroHold closure is magnetic with a three-way lock, so fastening is a matter of bringing two sides together rather than pinching a hook into an eye. Every other front-closure bra on this page — and almost every one you will find elsewhere — still assumes working fingers. For arthritis, a rotator cuff repair, carpal tunnel or shoulder surgery, that assumption is exactly what fails. The fabric is a modal knit with wide straps and wide sides, and it is wire-free and seamless enough to sleep in.
What we like
- Magnetic closure — no pinching, hooking or pressing required
- Three-way locking front closure
- Wire-free, seamless, no tags
- Thick wide straps and wide sides to stop digging
- Machine washable
Keep in mind
- **If you have a pacemaker or any implanted medical device, the manufacturer says to consult your physician before using it** — magnets and cardiac devices can interact
- Liberare describe it as mid-to-low support: they prioritised comfort over lift, so it is not the pick if you want lifting
- Costs roughly three times the hook-and-eye picks here
- Magnetic fasteners must be closed before washing, and it must not be ironed
Key features
- HeroHold magnetic front closure
- Made for arthritis, post-surgery, rotator cuff and limited dexterity
- Seamless modal knit, comfortable enough to sleep in
- Sculpts to the body across smaller and plus-size cups
- Closure
- Magnetic, 3-way locking
- Wire
- Wire-free
- Support level
- Mid to low (manufacturer's wording)
- Sizing
- Cups B-DDD (F)
- Care
- Machine wash cold, do not iron
Carole Martin All-Cotton Front-Closure Bra, No Underwire

Two things make this one worth knowing about. It is 95% cotton rather than nylon, so it wears cooler through a long day — which matters more than it sounds if skin is thin or easily irritated. And the cups are expandable, so there is no cup size to calculate: you measure once under the bust, in inches, and that is the whole fitting process. For a caregiver buying on someone else's behalf, or for anyone whose size has changed and who does not want to be re-measured, that removes the step people get stuck on.
What we like
- 95% cotton — breathable and cooler than nylon
- Expandable cups fit B, C and D, so no cup size to work out
- One underbust measurement is all you need; bands 34-44
- Extra wide straps spread weight across the shoulders
- Wire-free and unpadded
Keep in mind
- **The manufacturer states plainly that it holds and covers rather than lifts, and says to choose another style if you want shaping or lift for a heavier bust** — take them at their word
- Straps are a fixed length and do not adjust, so the size chart has to be right
- Front hook-and-eye still needs a pinch grip
Key features
- All-cotton blend rather than nylon
- Expandable cups — measure the underbust only
- Extra wide fixed-length straps
- No underwire and no foam pads
- Closure
- Hook & eye, front
- Wire
- Wire-free, unpadded
- Support level
- Holds and covers, does not lift
- Sizing
- Expandable cups B/C/D, bands 34-44
- Care
- 95% cotton, 5% spandex
Glamorise Wonderwire Full Figure Front-Closure Bra

There is a point at which wire-free stops doing the job, and this is the pick past it. The Wonderwire is built around a padded underwire — the padding is there specifically to stop the wire poking, which is the usual reason people abandon underwire altogether. Lace-topped cups with side-bust control shape rather than just contain, and the straps are wide, cushioned and adjustable so the weight is not carried on two thin bands. It is the only underwire pick on this page, and it is here because for some people it is the only thing that works.
What we like
- Padded underwire adds structure without the usual wire poke
- Side-bust control shapes as well as supports
- Wide cushioned adjustable straps
- Built for full figure and plus sizes
Keep in mind
- **Hand wash only** — on a bra worn daily that is a real commitment
- The only underwire on this page; if underwire is what you were escaping, take rank 2 instead
- Front closure is a snap-style fastening, which needs a firm press
Key features
- Wonderwire padded underwire
- Lace-topped cups with side-bust control
- Full figure and plus size fit
- Front closure for easy on and off
- Closure
- Snap-style, front
- Wire
- Padded underwire
- Support level
- High, structured
- Straps
- Wide, cushioned, adjustable
- Care
- Hand wash only
Fruit of the Loom Front-Closure Cotton Sports Bra, 3-Pack

Three bras in one purchase, which changes the arithmetic. If someone is moving to front closure for the first time and is not sure it will suit them, this is the low-risk way to find out, and if it does suit them there are already three in the drawer. The cut is a cotton-blend bralette style with wide built-up straps and a secure bottom band — light support rather than structure, wire-free, with full coverage and a smooth back that sits flat under clothes. Machine washable, which the two picks above are not.
What we like
- Three bras in one pack
- Machine washable, unlike the Playtex and Wonderwire picks
- Cotton-blend stretch fabric
- Wide built-up straps and a secure bottom band
- Wire-free with full coverage and back smoothing
Keep in mind
- Light, bralette-style support — not for a fuller bust
- Hook-and-eye front closure, so the grip problem remains
- Colours come as a set, so you take what is in the pack
Key features
- Three-pack for rotation and laundry days
- 95% cotton, 5% spandex stretch
- Wide built-up straps, non-slip fit
- Full coverage with back smoothing
- Closure
- Hook & eye, front
- Wire
- Wire-free
- Support level
- Light, bralette style
- Pack
- 3 bras
- Care
- Machine wash
What to look for
The closure type is the decision, not the words "front closure"
Almost every guide to this treats front-closure bras as one category. They are not, and the difference decides whether one actually works for the person wearing it.
- Hook-and-eye at the front — the most common by far. Still needs a pinch grip and a fair amount of finger strength. Fine for shoulder stiffness, not fine for bad arthritis.
- Snap or clasp — needs a firm, deliberate press rather than a pinch. Easier for some hands, harder for others.
- Magnetic — needs neither grip nor press. The only kind that works when fingers genuinely cannot pinch. Costs more, and carries a medical-device caution.
If the problem is reaching behind, any of the three fixes it. If the problem is the hands themselves, only the third one does.
Wire-free is not automatically less supportive
It usually is — but not always. Most wire-free bras trade lift for comfort, and several on this page say so themselves. Glamorise's MagicLift is the exception: it is built around a cushioned band engineered to lift without a wire, which is why it holds the support slot here rather than an underwire pick.
Underwire still has a place. Past a certain bust size, a wire is what stops the weight being carried on the shoulders. If that is you, a padded wire is the compromise worth trying before giving up on wire entirely.
Sizing when nobody wants to be re-measured
Bodies change, and the band and cup someone wore at fifty is often wrong at seventy-five. The usual advice is to get professionally fitted, which is genuinely good advice and is also the step most people skip.
There is a shortcut worth knowing: some bras use expandable cups sized only by the underbust measurement, so there is no cup letter to work out. One tape measure, one number in inches, done. That is particularly useful for a caregiver buying on someone else's behalf, where asking for a cup size is awkward or the answer is out of date.
Where straps are a fixed length rather than adjustable, the size chart has to be right first time — there is no adjusting your way out of a bad fit afterwards.
Check the care label before you buy, not after
Two of the six picks here are hand wash only. For an occasional bra that is a non-issue. For the one someone wears every day, it means either hand washing several times a week or buying several and rotating — and for a caregiver already doing someone else's laundry, it is a real cost.
Machine washable is worth paying attention to for this reason alone. Where a bra has magnetic fasteners, close them before washing and keep it out of the iron.
Frequently asked questions
A bra with a magnetic front closure. Every other type — hook-and-eye, snap, clasp — still requires pinching or pressing with some finger strength. A magnetic closure only requires bringing the two sides near each other. If arthritis, carpal tunnel or post-surgery weakness is the problem, that difference is the whole thing. If the problem is only reaching behind the back, any front-closure bra will do and you can spend less.
Some are, many are not, and the front closure itself has nothing to do with it. What matters is whether the bra is built to lift. A wire-free bra with a cushioned lift band or a padded underwire will lift; a soft cotton bralette will hold and cover but not raise. Several manufacturers state this outright in their own listings — Carole Martin, for instance, says its bra covers rather than lifts and tells you to choose another style if you want shaping. Read the maker's own wording before the marketing.
Ask the doctor who manages the device. Manufacturers of magnetic-closure garments, Liberare included, tell anyone with a pacemaker or implanted medical device to consult their physician first, and that caution is worth taking seriously rather than working around. Magnets and cardiac devices can interact. If the answer is no, a large-hook front closure is the next easiest option.
Yes, if you pick for support rather than for the closure. Full-figure front-closure bras exist in both wire-free and padded-underwire versions, with wide cushioned straps and closures that add hooks as the size goes up so the fastening does not become the weak point. What does not work at a fuller size is a light bralette-style bra, whatever its closure.
A magnetic closure first, and failing that a front closure with deliberately oversized hooks. It is also worth looking at the wider dressing problem rather than the bra alone — if fastening a bra is difficult, buttons, zips and socks usually are too, and there are tools that help with all of them. Our dressing aids guide covers those.
It depends on the bra, and it varies more than you would expect within this category. Two of our six picks are hand wash only. If it is going to be worn daily, treat machine washable as a real feature rather than a detail. Magnetic fasteners should be closed before washing, and nothing here should be ironed.
The final verdict
For most people the Playtex 18 Hour is the right starting point — larger hooks, wire-free, and everyday support without moving to a specialist product. If the reason you are here is lack of lift, take the Glamorise MagicLift instead; it is the one wire-free bra here genuinely engineered to support rather than just to be comfortable. But if the hands are the problem rather than the reach, none of that matters. Buy the magnetic Liberare and accept the cost, with one condition: if there is a pacemaker or any implanted device involved, ask the doctor first. If fastening clothes is a difficulty generally, our dressing aids guide covers the tools that help with buttons, zips and socks.
