How many years should you plan for?
Average years left, the chance of reaching 90 or 100, and the ages to plan around, for one person or a couple. Built on Social Security’s own life table.
Enter a sex and age. The results use Social Security’s own life table, the one actuaries use for the program’s long-range forecasts.
Planning ages
- Half of people this age reach88
- 1 in 4 reach93
- 1 in 10 reach96
The average hides a wide spread. Many financial planners plan to at least the 1-in-4 age, so money and care plans don’t run out early.
Chance of reaching each age
- Age 8086%
- Age 8566%
- Age 9041%
- Age 9517%
- Age 1004%

Health, family history, income and habits change any one person’s outlook a great deal. Couple figures assume the two lifetimes are independent. Not medical or financial advice.
How long do older adults live?
The figures below come straight from the Social Security Administration’s period life table for 2023, the table its actuaries used in the 2026 Trustees Report. “Years left” is the average; the 1-in-4 age is the age a quarter of people that age reach, which is a safer number to plan around.
| Age today | Men: years left | 1 in 4 men reach | Women: years left | 1 in 4 women reach |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 65 | 18.1 (to 83) | 89 | 20.7 (to 86) | 92 |
| 70 | 14.7 (to 85) | 90 | 16.8 (to 87) | 92 |
| 75 | 11.4 (to 86) | 91 | 13.1 (to 88) | 93 |
| 80 | 8.5 (to 88½) | 92 | 9.8 (to 90) | 93 |
| 85 | 6.0 (to 91) | 93 | 7.0 (to 92) | 95 |
| 90 | 4.1 (to 94) | 95 | 4.8 (to 95) | 96 |

This calculator and SSA’s own
Social Security also offers a Life Expectancy Calculator that asks for sex and date of birth and gives the average years left. Ours uses SSA’s published life table directly and adds what families planning care and money usually need next: the chance of reaching each later age, the ages to plan for, and the figures for a couple.
Using it to plan for a parent
- Long-term care: a parent of 80 has a real chance of needing care for years, not months. Our senior care cost calculator shows what each year costs.
- Making savings last: plan to the 1-in-4 age rather than the average, so a parent who lives longer isn’t left short.
- Medicaid: the 5-year look-back means planning must start well before care is needed.
- Paperwork: a durable power of attorney and health care proxy matter more the longer someone is likely to live with frailty.
What the averages leave out
A life table describes everyone of an age and sex in the US. It doesn’t know about a particular person’s heart condition, smoking, weight, family history or income, all of which shift the odds. Treat the result as a starting point for a conversation with a doctor or financial planner, not a forecast.
Life expectancy questions
What is the SSA life expectancy calculator?
The Social Security Administration publishes its own Life Expectancy Calculator on ssa.gov, which asks for sex and date of birth. This calculator uses the life table SSA’s actuaries publish (the 2023 period life table used in the 2026 Trustees Report) and adds the chance of reaching later ages, planning ages and couple figures. Results can differ slightly because SSA’s tool also uses your exact birth date.
What is the life expectancy of a 65-year-old?
Using SSA’s 2023 period life table, a 65-year-old man lives another 18.1 years on average, to about 83, and a 65-year-old woman another 20.7 years, to about 86. About 1 in 4 men aged 65 reach 89, and 1 in 4 women reach 92.
Why does life expectancy go up as you get older?
Because the people who reach an age have already survived the risks before it. Life expectancy at birth in the table is about 76 for men and 81 for women, but a man who has reached 80 can expect to live to about 88½, and a woman to about 90.
What is a period life table?
A period life table shows death rates for every age in a single year, here 2023. It describes how long people would live if today’s death rates never changed. Because death rates have generally fallen over time, many actuaries treat period figures as slightly conservative for younger people.
How accurate is a life expectancy calculator?
It is accurate for groups, not for individuals. The averages come from the whole US population of each age and sex. Health conditions, smoking, family history, income and education change any one person’s outlook a great deal, so use the results for planning, not prediction.
How do I use life expectancy for Social Security planning?
Claiming age is a trade-off between smaller checks for longer and bigger checks for fewer years. If you, or the longer-lived spouse, are likely to reach the planning ages, waiting usually pays off; a survivor generally keeps the larger of the two benefits. Social Security’s own calculators and a my Social Security account show your real benefit amounts.
How this tool works & sources
Uses the Social Security Administration’s Period Life Table for 2023, as used in the 2026 Trustees Report, copied without change. Average remaining years are SSA’s published life expectancy column. The chance of reaching a later age is the ratio of survivors at the two ages, rebuilt from SSA’s death probabilities (which reproduces SSA’s own survivor and life expectancy columns). Planning ages are the oldest ages that at least half, a quarter and a tenth of people of that age and sex reach. Couple figures assume the two lifetimes are independent. These are population averages; they do not account for health, habits or family history, and are not medical or financial advice.
