The PureRelief XL is a 12 x 24 inch electric heating pad with six heat settings, a soft microplush cover you can machine wash, and a 2-hour automatic shut-off.

For older adults, the Pure Enrichment PureRelief XL gets the important things right. At 12 x 24 inches it covers the whole lower back, both knees or a hip and thigh in one go. Its six heat settings (Pure Enrichment lists 105°F to 140°F) let you start gently. It switches itself off after 2 hours, the single most important safety feature on a heating pad for a senior. The microplush cover is soft against thin skin and goes in the washing machine.

Its limits are those of every electric pad: it gives dry heat unless you mist it, it needs a socket, and it must never be slept on or used on numb skin. Our main arthritis pick, the Sunbeam XpressHeat XL, is a similar size. Choose the Pure Enrichment for its softer cover, long cord and 5-year warranty.

What we like

  • Large 12 x 24 in pad covers the whole back, both knees or hip and thigh at once
  • Six heat levels, so you can start low and stay there
  • 2-hour automatic shut-off
  • Very soft microplush cover that can be machine washed
  • Long 9 ft cord reaches a recliner or bed from the wall
  • 5-year warranty from Pure Enrichment, long for this price

Worth noting

  • Dry heat unless you mist the cover yourself
  • Needs a socket, so it is not portable
  • The 2-hour shut-off means pressing the button again for longer sessions
  • Large size is more than you need for a single wrist or hand
  • Like any heating pad, unsafe on numb skin or during sleep

Buy it if…

  • Arthritis or stiffness in the back, hips or both knees
  • You want a soft cover that feels gentle on thin or sensitive skin
  • You use heat in a recliner or armchair and need a long cord
  • You want a long warranty for peace of mind

Look elsewhere if…

  • You want deeper moist heat without misting: a moist heat pack is designed for it
  • You want cordless heat you can move around with: see our microwavable heating pads
  • You have diabetic neuropathy or poor feeling in the area: ask your doctor before using any heating pad

What the PureRelief XL is

The PureRelief XL is an electric heating pad from Pure Enrichment, a US home-wellness brand. It is a flat 12 x 24 inch pad with a soft microplush cover, plugged into a detachable controller on a 9-foot cord.

The controller has six heat settings, which Pure Enrichment lists as running from about 105°F to 140°F, and a display showing the setting. Its InstaHeat element warms up within seconds of switching on. After 2 hours the pad switches itself off.

Pure Enrichment sells many PureRelief versions, which is why searches can be confusing. This review covers the classic 12 x 24 inch XL model with six settings. Other versions are listed below.

Using a heating pad safely as an older adult

Heating pads are a common cause of burns in older adults, because skin becomes thinner and sensation dulls with age. These rules matter more than any feature:

  • Never sleep with it on, even on a low setting. The 2-hour shut-off is a backstop, not permission.
  • Start on the lowest setting and only turn it up if you need to. Low heat for longer is safer than high heat.
  • Keep a layer of clothing or a thin towel between the pad and your skin, and check the skin every 15 to 20 minutes for redness.
  • Do not lie on top of the pad. Your body weight traps heat. Put the pad on top of the sore area instead.
  • Ask your doctor first if you have diabetes, neuropathy, poor circulation, or numbness in the area, or if you take medicines that reduce sensation.
  • Do not use on a fresh injury or swollen joint. Heat suits stiffness; cold usually suits new swelling.
  • Check the cord and pad regularly, and stop using it if it is damaged or the cover is worn.

Is it good for arthritis?

Warmth relaxes stiff muscles and helps joints feel looser, which is why many people with osteoarthritis find heat helps, especially in the morning or before gentle exercise. Arthritis organizations commonly suggest heat for stiffness and cold for flare-ups with swelling.

The XL size is the main reason we rate it for arthritis. One placement covers the whole lower back, both knees laid side by side, or a hip and outer thigh. That is more comfortable than moving a small pad around.

Moist heat: some people find damp heat penetrates better. Pure Enrichment says you can lightly mist the pad with water before use. Use only a light mist, and never soak it.

Settings, the auto shut-off and the controller display

Press the power button to switch on, then use the up and down buttons to choose a setting from 1 to 6. The display shows the current level.

After 2 hours the pad switches off automatically. To keep going, switch it on again. That pause is a useful moment to check your skin.

If the display shows “F” or the pad does not heat: this usually points to a connection or fault problem. Switch off and unplug, check that the controller is pushed firmly into the pad’s connector, wait a minute, then try again. If it continues, stop using the pad and contact Pure Enrichment, as it may be covered by the 5-year warranty. Never try to repair a heating pad.

Washing and looking after it

Pure Enrichment says the pad is machine washable. Always unplug and detach the controller first, then follow the care label. A gentle cycle and air drying are the safe choice.

Let it dry completely before plugging in again. Store it loosely folded or rolled, not tightly creased, and keep the controller and cord free of kinks.

Other Pure Enrichment PureRelief models

Pure Enrichment sells several PureRelief pads with similar names. The main differences:

  • PureRelief XL (12 x 24 in): the classic model reviewed here, with six settings.
  • PureRelief XL Extra-Long Back & Neck: a longer, narrower pad for the spine and neck, with four settings.
  • PureRelief Deluxe and XXL ultra-wide versions: bigger or plusher versions for wider coverage.
  • PureRelief Pro Far Infrared XL: an infrared version with four heat settings, at a higher price.
  • Neck & Shoulder pads: shaped to drape over the shoulders.

For most older adults with back, hip or knee stiffness, the classic XL is the best value. Choose the neck-and-shoulder style if that is where the stiffness is.

Pure Enrichment vs Sunbeam and other heat options

vs Sunbeam XpressHeat XL: our Sunbeam review covers a pad of a similar size, also with six settings and an auto shut-off. Both are good. The Pure Enrichment has a softer microplush cover and a long warranty; choose by cover feel and price on the day.

vs a moist heat pack: the Thermophore MaxHeat draws moisture from the air for deep moist heat. It is pricier, and many people with severe arthritis prefer it.

vs a microwavable pack: a microwavable pad is cordless but cools down and must be heated with care to avoid burns.

What Pure Enrichment says

How it compares to other heating pads

The PureRelief XL is our pick for large-area relief with a soft cover. Choose differently for deep moist heat or cordless use.

  • Sunbeam XpressHeat XL — a similar large electric pad with six settings and auto shut-off. Our main pick in the arthritis heating pad guide.
  • Thermophore MaxHeat — a moist heat pack for deeper heat, preferred by many people with severe arthritis. Costs more.
  • Microwavable heating pads — cordless warmth you can move around with, for shorter sessions.
