Quick answer: ProCare Reddie Hinged Wrap-Around: hinged support for arthritic knees that wraps on, with nothing to pull over the foot.

The right knee brace depends on where the arthritis hurts, and then on whether the person can actually get it on.

Top 6 Picks — Find Your Situation

For most older adults with arthritic knees that ache and sometimes feel unsteady, our overall pick, the ProCare Reddie Hinged Wrap-Around, gives hinged side support and wraps around the knee, so there is no sleeve to drag over the foot. If the arthritis is clearly worse on one side of the knee, an unloader brace has the strongest case, and the Ovation Game Changer is a lighter one with push-button buckles. For mild arthritis with swelling, the Bauerfeind GenuTrain is the best sleeve; for a first, low-cost try, the ACE adjustable brace; for larger legs, the McDavid VOW Plus Size; and for pain at the front of the knee on stairs, the DonJoy Reaction Web. A brace works alongside exercise, weight management and, where needed, a cane, not instead of them.

Best Overall

ProCare Reddie Hinged Wrap-Around Knee Brace

Best for: Arthritic knees that feel weak or wobbly, in someone who struggles with pull-on sleeves

Type
Hinged wrap-around
Put on
Wraps around; straps at the back
Support
Removable hinges both sides (no exposed metal)
Material
1/8 in neoprene, open back of knee

Independently researched · Updated October 2026

The most common reason a knee brace fails an older adult is not that it is the wrong design, but that it is too hard to put on, so it is not worn. The ProCare Reddie is a wrap-around brace: it wraps around the knee and fastens with straps at the back. There is no sleeve to work over the foot, ankle and calf.

It does not trade support for that convenience. Hinges on both sides, built into the fabric so no metal touches the skin, give the side-to-side support that helps a knee that feels like it might give way, and they can be removed when less support is needed. The open back of the knee stops the brace bunching when you sit. ProCare lists it for mild arthritis, mild instability and hyperextension.

What we love

  • Wraps on, so no pulling over the foot
  • Hinged side support for knees that give way
  • No exposed metal; open back stops bunching when seated
  • From ProCare, an established medical brace maker

Things to consider

  • Neoprene is warm, and can be sweaty in summer
  • Listed for mild problems: severe one-sided arthritis may need an unloader
  • Sold by a third-party seller; check the size chart before ordering

Right for you if

  • ✓Knees that ache and sometimes feel unsteady
  • ✓Pulling on a sleeve is difficult
  • ✓You want support for walking, stairs and daily jobs

Maybe skip it if

  • !Arthritis that is clearly worse on one side: ask about an unloader like the Ovation Game Changer
  • !Pain mainly at the front of the knee: the DonJoy Reaction Web is designed for that
  • !Larger thighs and calves: the McDavid VOW Plus Size is cut for them
  • !You want a product tested hands-on; we research listings and published guidance, and we say so

Getting started

  • →Measure the leg and check ProCare's size chart before ordering
  • →Put it on sitting down, with the knee slightly bent
  • →Fasten the straps snugly but not tight; you should fit a finger under each
  • →Check the skin each evening for the first week

How it compares

Our #2 pick, the Ovation Game Changer, is a different kind of brace: an unloader that shifts weight away from the worn side of the knee. Choose the ProCare for general arthritic aching and unsteadiness; choose the Ovation, ideally after talking to a doctor or physical therapist, when the arthritis is clearly worse on one side.

How we picked

We compared 12 options. We started from more than 60 knee braces: 12 shortlisted from the Amazon Deals Hub and the rest from Amazon searches for the types older adults need (unloaders, wrap-around and plus-size braces). We judged them on what matters most for arthritic knees in later life: whether the type suits arthritis and where it hurts, how easy it is to put on with stiff hands or a stiff knee, sizing that fits real legs, support that stays put, and honest claims. Every product detail on this page comes from the product's own Amazon listing, pulled through Amazon's product API on 26 October 2026. Guidance comes from the American College of Rheumatology and Arthritis Foundation's 2019 osteoarthritis guideline, Medicare's knee orthosis rules, and published research, cited where it appears. We did not test these braces hands-on, and we leave out or flag listing claims that go beyond the evidence.

Best Unloader for Knee Osteoarthritis#2

Ovation Medical Game Changer Unloader Knee Brace

Ovation Medical Game Changer single-upright OA unloader knee brace
Check Price on Amazon
Best for: Knee osteoarthritis that is worse on one side, after talking to a doctor or physical therapist

An unloader brace is the type with the strongest case for knee osteoarthritis, when the arthritis is worse on one side of the knee (most often the inner side). It gently shifts load away from the worn side. The Game Changer is a lighter, single-upright design that Ovation says is comfortable for all-day wear and works for either inner (medial) or outer (lateral) knee pain, adjusted with a key. Unusually for this kind of brace, it fastens with push-button release buckles, which the listing says are designed for people with limited hand mobility. It comes in left and right versions.

What we like

  • The brace type with the most support for one-sided knee osteoarthritis
  • Push-button buckles for weaker hands
  • Lighter, lower-profile than double-upright unloaders
  • Works for inner or outer knee pain

Keep in mind

  • Getting the offloading right takes adjustment; a fitting with a professional helps
  • Many times the cost of a simple brace
  • Buy the correct side: left and right are separate listings
Type
Single-upright OA unloader
Put on
Push-button release buckles, applied seated
Offloads
Inner (medial) or outer (lateral), adjustable
Sizing
One size; separate left and right
Fits
"Virtually all users", per Ovation
Best Compression Sleeve#3

Bauerfeind GenuTrain Knee Support

Bauerfeind GenuTrain knee support compression sleeve in titanium grey
Check Price on Amazon
Best for: Mild knee arthritis with swelling, in someone who can manage a pull-on sleeve

The best-made sleeve here, from a German medical support maker. It gives graduated, medical-grade compression, with a pad that holds the kneecap and smaller pads over the joint space, and Bauerfeind lists it for swelling, feelings of instability and mild osteoarthritis. It is sized properly, by measuring around the thigh and the calf at set points from the centre of the knee, which matters more for a sleeve than for any other brace. It is sold by Bauerfeind's US company.

What we like

  • Measured sizing for a proper fit
  • Medical-grade compression from a specialist maker
  • Pads around the kneecap and joint, per the listing
  • Lists swelling and mild osteoarthritis

Keep in mind

  • A pull-on sleeve: hard to get on with stiff hands or a stiff knee
  • No hinges, so less help for a knee that gives way
  • The most expensive of the non-unloader picks
Type
Knitted compression sleeve with pads
Put on
Pull-on over the foot
Support
Graduated medical-grade compression
Listed for
Swelling, instability, mild osteoarthritis
Sizing
By thigh and calf measurement
Best Budget#4

ACE Adjustable Knee Brace with Side Stabilizers

Best for: Trying a brace for the first time, on a budget

A low-cost way to find out whether a brace helps before spending more. ACE lists it for arthritic and painful knees: adjustable straps let you set how firm it feels, flexible stabilizers on both sides add side support, and one ambidextrous size fits either knee. It is sold by Amazon.

What we like

  • Lowest cost here
  • Adjustable compression with straps
  • Side stabilizers for a little extra support
  • Sold by Amazon

Keep in mind

  • One size will not fit very slim or very large legs well
  • Lighter support than a hinged brace
  • Neoprene can be warm
Type
Adjustable strap brace with stabilizers
Put on
Adjustable straps
Support
Flexible stabilizers both sides
Material
Neoprene
Sizing
One size fits most; either leg
Best Plus Size#5

McDavid VOW Plus Size Knee Brace with Stays

McDavid VOW plus size over-wrap knee brace with steel stays
Check Price on Amazon
Best for: Larger thighs and calves that ordinary braces dig into or slide off

Most knee braces are cut for slim legs, so on a larger leg they dig in, pinch or slide down, which is one of the most common complaints in this category. McDavid designed this one for larger legs. It opens fully and wraps on, so it can go on over trousers or leggings, with wide over-wrap straps around the thigh and below the kneecap that you can loosen or tighten through the day as swelling changes. Steel stays on each side give support without the bulk of a hinged brace. It is sold by Amazon.

What we like

  • Cut for larger legs, with wide straps that do not dig in
  • Wraps on, even over clothing
  • Straps adjust as swelling changes through the day
  • Sold by Amazon

Keep in mind

  • This link opens on 5XL/6XL: check McDavid's size chart and pick the right size on the listing
  • Stays, not hinges, so less control for a knee that buckles
  • Pricier than the ACE budget pick
Type
Over-wrap brace with steel stays
Put on
Opens fully; wraps on, even over clothing
Support
Spring steel stays both sides

Separate thigh and kneecap straps

Best for Kneecap Pain#6

DonJoy Reaction Web Knee Support

DonJoy Reaction Web grey knee support brace with compression undersleeve
Check Price on Amazon
Best for: Pain at the front of the knee, on stairs or getting up from a chair

Arthritis behind the kneecap (patellofemoral arthritis) hurts most on stairs, getting out of a chair and kneeling, and it calls for a different brace. DonJoy's Reaction Web uses a flexible web around the kneecap that the listing says absorbs shock and helps keep the kneecap tracking properly, over a thin compression undersleeve. DonJoy lists it for front-of-knee pain and mild arthritis, it fits either leg, and it is sold by Amazon.

What we like

  • Designed for pain around the kneecap
  • Light and breathable for all-day wear
  • From DonJoy, a long-established brace maker
  • Sold by Amazon

Keep in mind

  • The undersleeve has to be pulled on, which is hard with stiff hands
  • Not the brace for arthritis on the inner or outer side of the knee
  • Pricier than a basic brace
Type
Web brace over a compression undersleeve
Put on
Pull-on undersleeve, then the web
Support
Kneecap tracking and shock absorption
Listed for
Front-of-knee pain, mild arthritis
Sizing
Measured 6 in above and below the knee

What to look for

Match the brace to where it hurts

Knee arthritis is not one problem, and the brace that helps depends on which part of the knee is worn:

  • Pain on the inner (or outer) side of the knee, often worse after walking, sometimes with a bow-legged or knock-kneed shape: this is one-sided (unicompartmental) arthritis, and an unloader brace is the type designed for it
  • Pain at the front of the knee, around or behind the kneecap, worst on stairs, getting up from a chair or kneeling: this is often patellofemoral arthritis, and a kneecap (patellofemoral) brace suits it
  • A general ache, stiffness and swelling all round the knee: a compression sleeve gives warmth and a sense of support
  • A knee that gives way or feels unstable: a hinged brace gives the most side-to-side support

If you are not sure which applies, ask the doctor or a physical therapist before buying an unloader. A simple sleeve or wrap-around brace is a reasonable thing to try first.

What the evidence says

The American College of Rheumatology and Arthritis Foundation's 2019 guideline for osteoarthritis strongly recommends braces for the main knee joint (tibiofemoral braces, which include unloaders) for people whose knee arthritis affects walking, stability or pain enough to need an aid, as long as they can tolerate wearing one. It conditionally recommends kneecap braces for arthritis behind the kneecap. The same guideline strongly recommends a cane for knee arthritis that affects walking, and puts exercise and, where needed, weight loss at the centre of treatment.

The catch is in that phrase about tolerating the brace. A brace that is too hot, too fiddly or the wrong size ends up in a drawer, which is why this page puts so much weight on comfort and on how easy each one is to put on.

Getting it on: wrap-around beats pull-on for stiff hands

A sleeve has to be pulled over the foot, the ankle and the calf, then up and over a stiff knee. With arthritic hands, poor balance or a knee that will not bend far, that is a struggle every morning.

  • Wrap-around and over-wrap braces (our ProCare and McDavid picks) wrap around the leg and fasten with straps, so there is nothing to pull over the foot
  • Push-button buckles (our Ovation unloader) are easier than threading straps through loops
  • Put a brace on sitting down, never standing on one leg
  • If a sleeve is the right brace, rubber gloves give extra grip to ease it up the leg

Measure, don't guess the size

A brace that is too loose slides down; one that is too tight digs in and can restrict circulation. Most makers size by measuring around the thigh and calf at set distances from the middle of the kneecap (DonJoy measures 6 inches above and below), with the leg straight or slightly bent as the chart says. Measure in the morning, before the knee swells, and check the specific maker's chart rather than going by trouser size. For larger legs, choose a brace made for them, such as our McDavid pick, rather than forcing on the largest standard size.

Wearing a brace safely

  • Start with an hour or two a day and build up, wearing it for the activities that hurt (walking, stairs, gardening)
  • Unless a doctor has advised it, do not sleep in a brace
  • Check the skin under the straps and hinges each evening for red marks, rubbing or blisters, especially with thin skin
  • Take it off and loosen it if the leg below goes numb, tingles, swells or changes colour
  • A brace should support, not replace, strengthening exercise: weak thigh muscles make knee arthritis worse
  • If a knee suddenly becomes hot, red and very swollen, or a calf becomes painful and swollen, see a doctor rather than reaching for a brace

Copper, magnets and infrared fabrics

Many knee braces on Amazon advertise copper-infused fabric, magnets or "far-infrared" fibres as a source of pain relief. The evidence does not support it. A randomised, placebo-controlled trial led by the University of York, in 45 people aged 50 and over with osteoarthritis, found that copper bracelets and magnetic wrist straps did no better than a dummy strap for pain, stiffness or function. Any benefit from these braces comes from their compression, warmth and support, so judge them on those, and do not pay extra for the copper.

Does Medicare cover knee braces?

Sometimes, but not for a brace bought on Amazon. Medicare Part B can cover a knee brace (a knee orthosis) as durable medical equipment when strict conditions are met. For the prefabricated braces most people mean, the medical record must show either a recent knee injury or surgery, or that the person walks and has knee instability that the doctor has examined and described. Medicare's contractors state plainly that pain alone, or the patient's own description of instability, is not enough. Several unloader codes also need a face-to-face visit, a written order before delivery and prior authorization.

In practice that means the brace has to come through the doctor and a Medicare-enrolled supplier, and a brace bought online yourself is not reimbursed. If an unloader brace is being considered, ask the doctor whether the knee qualifies before buying one privately. HSA and FSA funds can usually be used for a knee brace.

Frequently asked questions

It depends where the arthritis is. For general aching and a knee that feels unsteady, a hinged brace such as our ProCare Reddie pick. For arthritis worse on the inner or outer side of the knee, an unloader brace. For pain around the kneecap, a patellofemoral brace like the DonJoy Reaction Web. For mild aching and swelling, a compression sleeve such as the Bauerfeind GenuTrain.

They can. The American College of Rheumatology and Arthritis Foundation's 2019 osteoarthritis guideline strongly recommends knee braces for people whose arthritis affects walking, stability or pain, provided they can tolerate wearing one, and conditionally recommends kneecap braces for arthritis behind the kneecap. A brace works best alongside strengthening exercise.

A brace for arthritis that is worse on one side of the knee. It uses a rigid frame and adjustable straps to shift some of the load away from the worn side, usually the inner side. Unloaders cost more and need careful adjustment, so it is worth asking a doctor or physical therapist whether your knee suits one.

For severe arthritis on one side of the knee, an unloader brace is the type designed to take load off the worn side. If both sides or the whole knee are affected, a hinged brace gives support, but a brace cannot replace cartilage; talk to the doctor about the full range of treatments.

A wrap-around brace that fastens with straps, like our ProCare Reddie and McDavid VOW picks. Push-button buckles, like those on the Ovation Game Changer, are also easier than threading straps. Pull-on sleeves are the hardest with stiff hands or a stiff knee. Always put a brace on sitting down.

Wear it for the activities that make the knee hurt or feel unsteady, such as walking, stairs and housework, and take it off when resting. Start with an hour or two and build up. Unless a doctor has said otherwise, do not sleep in it.

A hinged brace gives the most side-to-side support and can help a knee that feels unstable. But a knee that buckles is also a fall risk, so mention it to the doctor: strengthening exercise and a cane may matter as much as the brace.

One designed for larger legs, with wide adjustable straps, rather than the largest size of a standard brace, which tends to dig in and slide down. Our McDavid VOW Plus Size pick wraps on and adjusts at the thigh and below the kneecap.

There is no good evidence that copper adds anything. A randomised trial in people aged 50 and over with osteoarthritis found copper bracelets did no better than a dummy for pain or stiffness. A copper brace may still help through its compression and support, the same as a brace without copper.

Only when strict conditions are met, such as a recent knee injury or surgery, or knee instability examined and documented by a doctor, and only through a Medicare-enrolled supplier with a doctor's order. Pain alone does not qualify, and a brace you buy on Amazon is not reimbursed. HSA and FSA funds can usually be used.

A brace that is too tight can restrict circulation and rub the skin, and relying on a brace instead of staying active can let the thigh muscles weaken. Fit it properly, loosen it if the leg tingles or swells, and keep up the exercises a physical therapist recommends.

The final verdict

For most older adults with arthritic knees, start with the ProCare Reddie Hinged Wrap-Around: hinged support that wraps on without a struggle. If the arthritis is worse on one side of the knee, talk to the doctor about an unloader such as the Ovation Game Changer. Choose the Bauerfeind GenuTrain for mild arthritis with swelling, the ACE adjustable brace for a low-cost first try, the McDavid VOW Plus Size for larger legs, and the DonJoy Reaction Web for pain at the front of the knee. Pair any of them with strengthening exercise, such as our chair yoga for arthritic knees and hips, and a cane if walking is affected.

Our overall winner is the ProCare Reddie Hinged Wrap-Around Knee Brace. You can check the current price on Amazon.
